Mission II

Registration is open to all academic institutes in Malaysia. Deadline: 8 August 2025


The National Space Imaging Payload Competition is a space themed engineering simulation challenge organized by CYBERNET Malaysia in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). It aims to raise awareness of the role of engineering simulation in space applications, spark innovation, and showcase the engineering talent of Malaysia’s next generation through hands-on training and real-world challenges. 

More than just a competition, it’s a platform for the "Next Generation of Engineers" to spotlight their innovative ideas with the potential to grow into the commercial space with “Made in Malaysia” technology solutions.

The Challenge

Select one of the following themes. Detailed specifications for each theme and more details will be shared with the applicants during the General Briefing.

Theme A Compact Space Telescope for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Design a small space telescope for near-Earth celestial observation, suitable for CubeSat deployment.
Theme B Wide-Field Space Survey Telescope Design a space-based wide-field optical system intended for astrophysical surveys of galaxies and nebulae.
Theme C Near-Infrared Space Telescope Design an optical system optimized for near-infrared (NIR) astronomical observation.
Theme D Creative Concept Design Propose and design an innovative space telescope concept.

All participants will be provided with free access to Ansys Zemax OpticStudio optical system design and analysis software, training, and consultation during the competition period.

Team Composition

Register as an individual competitor or a team (max 3 members per team).
All applicants are required to have a mentor, ideally a lecturer. The competition is open to all current undergraduate and graduate students in Malaysia

  • BYOD – Minimum hardware specifications.
    • OS: 64 bit, 8cores
    • RAM: 16GB
    • ROM: 500GB
    • GPU: DirectX 11 support, 512MB VRAM
  • Bring your passion for space technology, and innovative thinking.

Terms & Conditions

  • All applicants must register online and pay a registration fee of RM 50 (per team) before the deadline.
  • The general briefing is compulsory for all teams. At least one member from each team must attend the briefing.
  • All teams must submit original work and any references to prior work must be properly cited. Plagiarism will result in immediate disqualification.
  • All finalists must present their solutions in-person at the Grand Finale (to be held in October. The date and the event agenda will be announced later).
  • CYBERNET reserves the right to use any and all solution materials submitted by participants for marketing and promotional purposes. However, all intellectual property rights in the design itself remain with the respective teams.
  • Employees of CYBERNET, group companies, partners, affiliates, and the event sponsors are not eligible to participate in the competition.
  • Organizers reserve the right to change the competition structure including but not limited to the event timeline and evaluation criterion, to ensure fair competition.
  • Organizers decision is final.

All solutions were designed, simulated, and optimized using Ansys Zemax OpticStudio.

OpticStudio is the industry standard optical system design and analysis software, combining sequential lens design, analysis, optimization, tolerancing, physical optics, non-sequential optical system design, and polarization in a single, easy-to-use package. OpticStudio offers a wide range of solutions that enables engineers realize their optical systems from a conceptual stage to a manufacturable design.
